It is one of the biggest and popular supermarket chains, that operate in Australia. Woolworths is such a company that promises to give hundred percent satisfactions to their customers and they claim their business to be a customer oriented business. In other words, profit maximization is not something, which the company believes to be its main motive; rather they believe that customer satisfaction must always be their top most priority.[1] In order to ensure that all their customers are happy with their service, they need to look after each and every detail of their business operation starting right from the quality of the products to the outlook of the stores, coupons, vouchers and of course the overall customer service.[2] However, over the past few years, this organization is facing a severe issue, which is decreasing their market shares and eventually their profit margins. The current challenge that is being faced by this company is that of customer dissatisfaction. Out of five star rating, this organization has got a mere rating of only three stars as has been suggested by the last current records. Apart from this, the customers are also complaining about issues like poor and stale products, low-quality products, false vouchers and coupons, poor customer care and helpline services etc.[3] According to the initial business strategies of this organization, the target customers were mainly the children and the teenagers or the young people, who are students and office people and also the older generation of people because they are usually in need of lot of energy and will definitely have a demand for fresh, healthy and unadulterated organic products and grocery items like fresh fruits, vegetables, meat , health and energy drinks and health drinks etc. However, according to some customers, they were highly unhappy with the quality of the fruits and vegetables that were available at the store outlets. They were stale and not fresh as the customers expected. Moreover, there were issues with the quality of milk that was being sold. According to some customers, the milk was not as fresh and healthy, as it should have been or as per the price.[4] It is quite obvious that the customers will not accept any poor quality goods if they are paying the exact price for the same. [5] Major issue existing in the organization: Customer dissatisfaction regarding voucher malfunction Over the last few years, Woolworths is facing several issues related to their business, which is not only hampering their total sales that eventually bringing down their profit margins but is also shaking the customer goodwill which is supposed to be the very base of their organization. Being a supermarket chain, they often have to face severe tough competitions from their competitors operating in the market. Some of the well known and powerful competitors of the Woolworths are Coles, Wesfarmers, Aldi etc. These supermarkets also are in search for opportunities to increase their sales and as the records and reviews from different sources suggest, over the years Woolworths is receiving a very tough challenge from all these companies and is unable to come up and solve the loopholes that have somehow crept into their business organization. One of the major issues that are responsible for the recent deteriorating market shares of Woolworths is its customer dissatisfaction.[6] This is something that must be the topmost priority in the business planning of any company, particularly a company like Woolworths, which operates in supermarket chains[7]. Supermarket usually is a place where the customers come in search for good, healthy and fresh items that will not cause any harm to them rather will enable them to have a happy, healthy and disease free life[8]. Woolworth's deals in both organic and well as other grocery products and over the past few years, the reports are showing that the quality of these products has deteriorated a lot. It is a natural thing for the customers to deflect or avoid buying products from the groceries that sell damaged or poor quality products. The customers have vested their faith in the organization for several years and will obviously not face issues like this.[9] Strategies adopted to solve the problem The company was slowly earning bad reputation from the customers because of the voucher scam. The customers have vested their trust in this company for several years and are in search of some added advantages like free gifts, coupons, vouchers etc. Woolworths also allowed discounts to its customers on meat, but unfortunately, these vouchers malfunctioned and misguided the customers as the discount was only on particular kind of meat and not on all types. In order to overcome this, the organization adopted several measures like appointing a separate group of staffs to take care of the discount coupon section so that no false information is printed on it. To take care of the fact that the customers are no longer mislead, immediate action was taken to correct the false information that created all these confusions. The strength of this enterprise was its major contribution towards the society. It has been noticed over the years that the enterprise has really been able to achieve its goal of zero food waste thus trying to fulfil its goal of making the world a better place to live in. Weakness- The major weakness that the company is most likely to face is the tough competition existing in the market. As this enterprise mainly deals in the retail chain of markets, it is likely to come across a very severe competition by other retail organizations like Kmart, Wesfarmers chain etc which have also started using tools like discounts and rewards to gain a huge customer base. Opportunities- The business plan at the same time talks about the different opportunities available at the disposal of the company, which it can use to develop itself. Opportunities for modern scientific digitalized devices, advancement in the supply chains and changes in the consumer lifestyles. Multi option retailing is another opportunity that this company can look forward to in order to cater to the varying needs of the consumers and they must start using these modern scientific devices in order to increase the customer satisfaction by creating online customer forums, helpline numbers, or by providing free internet access in the branch outlets etc which would help them to deal with the prevalent issue of customer dissatisfaction. Threats- The threats as were analyzed are mainly from the other retail markets existing and operating in the market like Coles Supermarket. Another threat can be the intervention of the Government, which might stunt the growth in some parts of the retailing industry. They must start adopting measures to deal with these threats so that they can deal with the issue of customer satisfaction, as there is a high chance that the customers can soon switch over to other alternatives that are readily available in the market. Business plan: Porters five forces Bargaining power of the customers is relatively higher because they have a large number of alternatives to switch over as there are many supermarkets providing the items of basic necessities in considerable amounts. Moreover, it has been seen that Woolworths is not able to satisfy its customers related to issues like product quality, store outlook, and management, customer helpline services, offers, rewards, vouchers, and coupons. The other competitors in the market will naturally grab the opportunity and will provide the customers with all these facilities that Woolworths is failing to give them. The threat of entry of new firms and entry of new substitutes is relatively lower than the threat of rivalry that exists between the Australia retail firms. There are some of the major competitors that might give a very strong competition in the long run. Estimated Cost As per the strategies planned to overcome the challenges, the organization needs to implement some changes in its operations. To run the organization smoothly and increase the profit margin, Woolworths must take necessary actions and that incurs some cost. The cost is nothing but investments for the improvement of the services of the company. It should improve its customer care service, in store and online. There is official website and mobile app for Woolworths. The support services through the app and website should also be improved. It must also change the strategies regarding the vouchers and discount coupons. For that, it must print new coupons with correct validity and information. The gifts to the customers should be provided with bulk purchase or with a certain amount of purchase. The estimated costs for the new strategies are listed in the table below. According to my understanding, customer satisfaction is the first priority of the organization and hence, it must try and improve on all those grounds related to the issue of customer satisfaction and goodwill. As my involvement was in the discount and voucher section, I came to know that the company is also facing several issues quite recently regarding the false information being printed on the vouchers and thus, misleading the consumers.[10] The company also suffered the meat voucher scam where the consumers complained of having been misguided regarding the discount offer that should have been on all types of meat as per the documents but was allowed only on the fresh meat. [11]It was because of this reason that measures are to be taken for proper implementation of the offers and the discounts. [12]In todays world, the customers are looking forward towards best of the facilities and are not going to tolerate any thing that would dissatisfy them. Hence, I being involved in the project proposed the idea of appointing a separate group of staffs who would be looking after the discount plans and the voucher and coupon section. There must also be some staffs placed at every outlet of the organization who can guide the buyers regarding the discounts and the offers that are available on various products.[13] Benefit of the investment Benefits of the investment can be derived through a break even point analysis of the investment of Woolworths. This break even analysis depicts the relationship between the volume of cost and profit level at different levels of activity of the organization, with an emphasis on the break even point. At this point, the organization earns neither profit nor loss. This point is reached when the money earned from sales becomes equal with the money spent on production of goods and services[14]. The estimated cost of the company represents the investment done by Woolworths for implementing the project improvement plan. It helps in measuring the profit and losses of the organization at various production levels. However, it assumes that the sales prices are constant at all levels of production and the production and sales are same. Moreover, it can be applied to only one product or product mix at a time[15]. In the new plan for Woolworths, it can be found that there are mostly variable costs. However, the variable costs change according to the level of sales, while the fixed costs remain the same throughout the production time. Initially, the company would face a loss, as the cost curve lies above the total revenue curve. When the investments would start to give the returns, then a point will be reached, when the cost and revenue of the company would be equal and there would be neither profit nor loss. After that point is reached, the revenue curve goes higher than the cost curve and profit margin starts to increase[16]. Woolworths would be implementing the changes in 12 months of duration. It can be assumed that the returns of the investments would be generated after the 12 months. The plan expects to improve the customer services, thereby improving the customer satisfaction level. Hence, level of sales would increase, a nd the gap between the cost and revenue would be decreasing till the break even point is reached. The benefits of investment are that, it will eventually bring about a positive performance and profit of Woolworths by improving various services of the company. Unless the investment is made, the changes in the strategy cannot be implemented. Additional recommendations As far as my recommendations are concerned, I would like to suggest that the organization keeps a check into the matter that customers are not misguided or misled in any way. They must try and improve in terms of discounting and voucher allowances, no false information is to be printed on the vouchers. Modern scientific methods must be adopted for gaining control over the online marketing as well. Developing some home pages or portals giving vivid descriptions of the organization and its products will be very helpful for attracting more number of customers. Developing customer forums is also quite instrumental in interacting with customers. Apart from this, starting to, me delivery systems will also give the customer base a great boost. This will put the organization on a fast gear because customers are always ruining search for that what is easy and beneficial for them. The organization must also arrange for the customer loyalty programs to adopt better means for providing customer satisfaction.[17] Conclusion Thus it is seen from this business plan that there are some very critical issues existing within this organization that needs to be solved immediately. The customers are not really happy with the overall customer service and so the company needs to work hard on improving their store outlets, the product quality, customer assistance etc. The company must not only be concerned about abolishing the competition but also work for the overall improvement. The business plan suggested that there has to be offers and discounts on all products that the company will operate in starting from the organic products that are fruits, vegetable to the grocery items and even on items like petrol and diesel. For every purchase of the companys products, the customers would get discounts. This is how the marketing strategy of the business was proposed and this would satisfy two fold goals-firstly, it would increase the goodwill of the customers thus strengthening the customer base of the company and secon dly it would give a boost to the total sales of the business. Once the company is able to win over the trust and good reputation of the customers, it automatically opens several doors of opportunities in front of the company for proper growth and development. The complexities of communication make it more difficult for culturally, economically and socially diverse workers to resolve the issues and problems they encounter on the job. While conflict is inevitable in groups and organizations due to the complexity and interdependence of organizational life, theorists have differed about whether it is harmful or beneficial to organizations. More recently, researchers have theorized that conflict is beneficial under some circumstances (Tjosvold, 1991; Van de Vliert De Dreu, 1994). [3] Thus, this paper attempts to present the losses and benefits from conflicts in organizations. I. CONFLICT IN GROUPS AND ORGANIZATIONS A. Definition Generally, conflict is defined as a contest of opposing forces or power. 4] it is a perceived difference between a two or more parties that results in mutual opposition. [5] Looking at conflict in the context of groups, there is what we call an Intergroup Conflict, which can be defined as the behavior that occurs among organizational groups when participants identify with one group and perceive that other groups may block their group’s goal achievement or expectations. [6] Intergroup conflict with in organizations can occur in both horizontal vertical directions. A. 1 Horizontal Conflict. This type of conflict occurs among groups or departments at the same level in the hierarchy, such as between line staff. 7] This is commonly observed between Production Quality Control Departments, Sales Finance Departments, or RD Marketing Departments. A. 2 Vertical Conflict. This arises over issues of control, power, goals, and wages and benefits. [8] A typical source of vertical conflict is between head quarters executives and regional plants or franchises. Status and power differences among groups are often greater for vertical conflict. Part of the reason vertical conflict occurs is to equalize power differences; for example, unions try to give workers more power over wages or working conditions. [9] B. The Nature of Conflict Conflict as related to competition is illustrated by the following figure: The illustration shows how conflict and competition are related. Competition occurs when groups strive for the same goal, have little or no antagonism toward one another, and behave according to rules and procedures. In conflict, on the other hand, one group’s goals jeopardize the others; there is open antagonism among the groups; and few rules and procedures regulate behavior. When this happens, the goals become extremely important, the antagonism increases, rules and procedures are violated, and conflict occurs. 10] C. Causes of Conflict A number of factors contribute to conflict. Several of the most important causes are discussed below. C. 1 Task Interdependence. Task interdependence refers to the dependence of one unit on another for materials, resources, or information. [11] Two types of task interdependence are particularly prone to conflict. One is sequential interdependenc e, in which one individual or work unit is heavily dependent on another. For example, waiters generally are more reliant on cooks than the reverse because waiters must depend on cooks to furnish good meals in timely manner. Line and staff conflicts often arise because staff members frequently are dependent upon the line to implement their ideas. The second form of task interdependence is reciprocal interdependence, in which individuals or work units are mutually interdependent. For instance, purchasing agents want engineers to provide detailed generic specifications so that they can negotiate lower costs from suppliers. At the same time, engineers need to obtain materials of the proper quality on a timely basis, so they may find it more convenient to specify a brand name. 12] Generally, as interdependence increases, the potential for conflict increases. [13] Sequential reciprocal interdependence require employees to spend time coordinating and sharing information. Employees must communicate frequently, and differences in goals or attitudes will surface. Conflict is especially likely to occur when agreement is not reached about the coordination of services to each other. Greater interderdependence means departments often exert pressure for a fast response because departmental work has to wait on other departments. C. 2 Scarce Resources. Another major source of conflict involves competition between groups for what members perceive as limited resources. [14] Possibilities for conflict expand when there are limited resources, such as office space, equipment, training, human resources, operating funds, and pay allocations. In their desire to achieve goals, groups want to increase their resources. This becomes another cause for conflict in groups. C. 3 Goal Incompatibility. Goal incompatibility is probably the greatest cause of intergroup conflict in organizations. The overall goals of an organization are broken down into operative goals that guide each department. The accomplishment of operative goals by one department may block goal accomplishment by other departments and hence, cause conflict. [15] Out of necessity, organization members frequently pursue goals that are somewhat different from one another, setting the stage for potential conflicts. [16] For example, sales personnel may find it easier to battle the competition by promising very quick deliveries, while people in manufacturing may find that small production runs on short notice interfere with their cost cutting efforts. C. 4 Communication Failures. Breakdown in communication due to distortions or lack of communication often lead to conflicts. [17] Conflict in an organization is an indication of the most basic communication failure. Failure to talk with someone. Failure to notify someone of something before it becomes public. Failure to involve someone in a problem-solving process. [18] C. 5 Individual Differences. Differences in personality, experience, and values make frequent conflicts likely. [19] Functional specialization requires people with specific education, skills, attitudes, and time horizons. When an individual who have ability and aptitude in marketing joins the marketing department. Eventually, that individual will be influenced by departmental norms and values, attitudes, and standards of behavior, differ across departments, which is often a source of horizontal conflicts. Cultural differences can be particularly acute in the case of mergers or acquisitions. Form Over Content in the Film Mystic River (2004) essays The content of the movie Mystic River (2004), directed by Clint Eastwood, demands the form, but in a unique, creative way that is far more interesting and fresh than the typical form of the average whodunit murder mystery. The formalistic elements of Mystic River are in fact very non-tr5aditional, in terms of containing not just the typical beginning; middle, and end elements of a whodunit murder mystery. Instead, Mystic River begins with Dave being picked up by child molesters posing as city officials while his friends Sean and Jimmy watch helplessly. This opening scene sets the stage for all the rest that follow, as Eastwood then shows the ways that this early horrible experience forever marks, and in various distinct ways interferes with, the separate lives of all three of these childhood friends when they become adults. In terms of both cinematic style and distinctive shots and camera angles, Mystic River (2004) also contains many imaginative elements of the film noir genre, e.g., smoky bars; dirty rooms; dark alleys, which suit this film in particular very well (but are not usually elements found within the typical whodunit film). These film noir elements within Mystic River, however, add significantly to the films overall mood and atmosphere, of inevitable doom combined with deeply disturbing creepiness and psychological angst on the part of all three major characters; their wives, and others. In fact, these various film noir elements in particular, combined with the automatic suspense of a more typical whodunit that Eastwood also manages to inject into this film, create extra measures of suspense and dread within the films audience as well. Discrimination And Empowerment In Mental Health Social Work Essay This essay will firstly define what discrimination is and what it means to discriminate against something. It will then explain what it means to discriminate against someone or a group in social work practice. This will be a very broad definition that encompasses a variety of different service user groups. Examples will be used to demonstrate what discrimination may look like in social work practice and everyday life. To gain a better understand the essay will critically explore theory and ideas around power and how power manifests between groups. This part of the essay will touch on the idea of othering. The essay will use social constructionism theory to analyse this concept of power. The essay will then focus in on mental health. This part of the essay will firstly look at what a mental health problem is and explore the stigma of being labelled with a mental health problem. The essay will then go deeper to focus on how the western medical model can discriminate against Black and Ethnic Minority groups (BME), even if indirectly. The essay will then critically explore why BME adults, particularly men, are overrepresented in the mental health service. Links will be made to institutional racism and the fact that BME children are underrepresented in child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS). In in broadest definition, to discriminate means to differentiate or to recognise a distinction (Oxford Dictionaries 2012). In this broad sense it is a part of daily life to discriminate. For example, an adult may discriminate between lanes on a motorway and a baby will often discriminate between a stranger and their caregiver. Discrimination becomes a problem when the difference or recognised distinction is used for the basis of unfair treatment. This is the discrimination that social workers need to be vigilant for. Discrimination is not always intentional (Thompson 2009) and there are various types of discrimination (EHRC 2012). Discrimination can be direct, indirect, based on the perception that someone has a protected characteristic or discriminate against someone who is associated with a person who has a protected characteristic (EHRC 2012). The Equality Act (2010) also aims to protect people with a protective characteristic(s) from victimisation, harassment and failure to make reasonable adjustments (Home Office 2012). Thompsons (1997) PCS model demonstrates that discrimination is not always on a personal level and it is not just solely down to the individual. I will return to the PCS model later on in the essay. Social workers act as mediators between service users and the state. Social workers are in a role that can potentially empower or oppress (Thompson 1997). For this reason Thompson (1997: 11) argues that good practice must be anti-discriminatory practice. All other areas of practice could be brilliant and the social worker could have very good intentions but if the social worker cannot recognise the marginalised position of some of the people they are working with their interventions could potentially further oppress (Thompson 1997). Thompson (1997) reminds the reader many times throughout the book that If youre not part of the solution you are part of the problem. I choose to include this because it reinforces that social workers need to challenge discrimination and take action against it. To accept it and to not swim against the tide does indeed make us part of the problem. Where does discrimination come from and why do people, institutions and systems discriminate against people? This part of the essay will critically explore the concept of power and social constructionism in relation to discrimination and social work. Power is defined by Haralambos and Holborn 2000: 540) very loosely as the ability to get your own way even when others are opposed to your wishes. This is of course a very simple definition of a complex concept. There are many models and theories around power. Thompson (1998: 42) identified a common theme of the ability to influence or control people, events, processes or resources. These common themes of power all have the potential to be used destructively in social work. Social workers have the ability and power to influence and control, whether this is on an individual personal level or as a gate keeper of services or agent of control. Social workers need to be aware of power as they work with people who are marginalised and powerles s in comparison; people who social workers could potentially oppress and even worse, abuse. Explore Shakespeare’s presentation of love in “As You Like It” Essay

Love has always been a foremost feature of the plays written by William Shakespeare and â€Å"As You Like It† is no exception with love regularly being represented throughout the play in a variety of ways. Just like in Shakespeares other works â€Å"As You Like It† is also broken down in to a main plot, which is then accompanied by smaller sub-plots that are scattered thorughout the play. Shakerspeare along with the play â€Å"As You Like It† skillfully uses these plots well to demonstrate various types of love. One variety of love that Shakespeare anylyses deeply is that of courtly love, whose ideas featured heavily around the fact that love brings suffering and agony to the lover and the theory that the male lover is controlled by his mistress to whom he must adhere to. Courtly Love had become a popular subject to write about during Shakespeare’s Elizabethan period and was also strongly evident in english literature for centuries previously. The concept of pastoral romance is also expressed in â€Å"As You Like It† , in which characters in rural countryside areas appear to act freely and joyfully , and this causes relationships to revel successfully and contently. In other words Pastoral romance seems to betray the countryside in stories as some sort of catalyst speeding up the progress and success of overall relationships. On the other hand life in the court seems to lack this optimism and instead living in developed areas (towns, villages, cities etc) seems to damage love between characters due to the stress and demand of court life. This type of romance is also strongly associated with disguise and the thought of characters falling in love with the opposite sex even when in disguise. The love in Shakespeare’s plays was recognised by the public of the Elizabethan period who had a good understanding about how genuine and pure love was between characters along with a good perception of the characters personalities (such as social status) just through the language they spoke during the play. The relationships in â€Å"As You Like It† are tested in one way or another, as most have to overcome obstacles and problems in order to succeed The particular relationships we see in the play symbolize and highlight the variant types of love that William Shakespeare wishes to explore. For example the familial love between the brothers of Orlando and Oliver, Duke Frederick and Duke Senior are emphasized due to the fact that both relationships are struggling and are under much tension when in normal circumstances you would presume this type of Familial relationship to prosper solidily, but alternatively have crumbled consistently. The relationship amid Orlando and his eldest borther, Oliver has reached an even more dire state, due to the recent event of their father Sir Rowland de Boys tragically dying for reasons unknown to us. Since this death of Sir Rowland de Boys Oliver and Orlando have been at conflict over the acts of Oliver who is restricting Orlando from receiving a gentleman’s education even though their father had wished him to have one. Both characters deal with this issue by becoming heated and ill-tempered towards each other. This is shown in Act 1 Scene 1 where Oliver says: â€Å"Wilt thou lay hands on me, villain?† Oliver and Orlando’s relationship changes significantly during the course of the play and it is seen that the countryside and its links to pastoral romance are responsible for the reformation of their relationship. This is true because the turning point of their complex relationship takes place in the countryside to where Orlando’s act of decency, (when he saves Oliver’s life from a viscous Lioness) provokes Oliver to want to become a more amiable person. Also the romantic relationships of the brothers between Rosalind and Celia respectfully seems to show that the concept of pastoral romance is functioning between them and therefore causing them to be more loving people. Understandably this friendly environment causes their own familial relationship to blossom. This transformation in their relationship is represented well when Oliver is delivering Orlando’s bloody handkerchief to Ganymede in Act 4 Scene 2. In this scene he confesses about his shameful past by saying: â€Å"‘Twas I, but ’tis not I. I do not shame To tell you what I was, since my conversion So sweetly tastes, being the thing I am.† This indicates that he is aware that he was in the wrong before, but now values and loves his younger brother, even more so that he obeyed Orlando’s order to deliver his handkerchief. Another familial relationship present in the play is that of Duke Senior and his younger brother Duke Frederick. This particular relationship is struggling due to the fact that Duke Senior has been exiled from the court by his usurping brother Duke Frederick. This unjustified act by Duke Frederick has left the two distant and bitter towards each other. This is shown in Act 2 Scene 3 when Duke Frederick is in the process of exiling Rosalind, the daughter of the banished Duke Senior. Duke Frederick’s tells Rosalind the reason for her being exiled is because: â€Å"Thou art thy father’s daughter. There’s enough.† This shows that there is obviously some hatred between the two brothers, especially on Duke Frederick’s part. Duke Senior and Duke Frederick react to this conflict in contrasting ways. Duke Senior seems to make the most out of the situation he has found himself in to positive effect. He does this to an extent that he’s actually enjoying life away from the court. On the other hand Duke Frederick deals with their dispute by becoming heated and showing irrational behavior (This is shown when out of blue he aggressively orders Rosalind to leave the court and even goes as far as saying he will kill her if she was not to obey) in play. The hatred of Duke Frederick towards Duke Senior is incredibly similar to that of Oliver towards to Orlando, in that there seems to be no obvious reason for why they should detest their brothers so much. But just like Oliver and Orlando, Duke Frederick and Duke Senior’s relationships turns around positively in the latter stages of the play. This turn of events is due to the remarkable change of mind from Duke Frederick who persuaded by an old religious man on the outskirts of the forest to not invade the Forest of Ardenne decides to conclude his search for his brother. Instead, as we’re told by Jacques de Boys in Act 5 Scene 4 that he: â€Å"After some question with him, was converted Both from his enterprise and from the world, His crown bequeathing to his banished brother, And all their lands restored to them again That were with him exiled† This act of love shown by Duke Frederick towards Duke Senior and his company could also be due to the powers the countryside possesses through pastoral romance. This could be explained by the way that Duke Frederick has a dramatic change of heart when entering the forest and he also wants to be â€Å"freed† from court life by deciding to join a monastery. A prominent relationship on display in â€Å"As You Like† is between the inseparable cousins that are Rosalind and Celia. This relationship is under strain mainly just because of the complications surrounding their father’s relationship. They have been brought in to the thick of their father’s own personal conflict due to Duke Frederick’s antics, referring to him wanting to exile Rosalind and consequently separate Rosalind and Celia. Rosalind and Celia respond to the antics of their fathers positively, by promising to each other that they’ll stand by each other religiously through the hard times that are facing them, causing them both to flee from the court together. This united type behavior form the cousins shows the audience that this love is extremely solid and their love for each other is cannot be doubted. This is shown when Celia responds to her fathers actions by saying to Rosalind in Act 1 Scene 3: â€Å"Prithee, be cheerful. Know’st thou not the duke Hath banished me, his daughter?† Furthermore Rosalind and Celia decide to overcome their complications by fleeing to the Forest of Ardenne to find refuge. This seems to work dividends, as when they are in the forest the pair seems more relaxed and joyful than they were when they were generating tentative feelings back at the court. This is shown through the way they act more freely and seem more comfortable expressing their views on topics than they were in the court. They also becoming more suspect to falling in love, and this shows in the way they fall in love with Orlando and Oliver. All this makes one presume that pastoral romance is in progress with this pair. A different type of alliance is show using Adam the servant and Orlando in the play â€Å"As You Like It†. Between these two characters is dutiful love shown from both sides. The obstacle that this exact relationships faces is down to the misbehavior shown from Orlando’s brother Oliver, who Adam says is plotting to kill Orlando. The pair then address this situation in the same way as Celia and Rosalind did, by escaping in to the forest. This is where Adam’s dutiful love is evident when he swears allegiance to Orlando in Act 2 Scene 3 by saying: â€Å"Here is the gold. All this I give you. Let me be your servant.† Theses words are very strong, as Adam shows he will give Orlando everything he has even his fortunes just so that Orlando is able to be content and safe. Further on in the play Orlando also shows loyalty pointing to Adam. This dutiful love is expressed in the way Orlando carries Adam in to shelter and vows to find his poorly servant food; he even makes a fool of himself in front of Duke Senior and his Lords purely in attempting to find his loyal servant some much-needed food. This dutiful love shown on Orlando’s part can be seen in the way he tells Adam in Act 2 Scene 6: â€Å"Come, I will bear thee to some shelter, and thou shalt not die for lack of a dinner if there live anything in this desert† Once again you can say that the concept of pastoral romance has left this pair living happily ever after as it looks to have solved all their problems, which they have now left at the court. A different relationship represented in â€Å"As You Like It† is that of Silvius and Phoebe. In this relationship the love is not shared from Phoebe in contrast to Silvius who seems to be suffering much grief and pain due to his immense and obsessive love for Phoebe. Both characters face their dispute concerning their conflicting views by becoming frustrated, Silvius because he cannot obtain Phoebe’s love and Phoebe because of Silvius constant pleas for her to welcome his fondness for her. The evidence to show that Phoebe does not show the same affection for Silvius can be seen when she comments on how much she’d rather not be in a romantic relationship with Silvius in Act 3 Scene 5 by saying to Celia (dressed as Ganymede): â€Å"Sweet youth, I pray you chide a year together. I had rather hear you chide than this man woo.† This idea that Silvius is suffering thanks to the elements of love is very similar to the objectives of courtly love. Obviously this situation proves problematic for it to be possible for Silvius’s and Pheobe’s relationship to advance, but a few twists occurring at the end of the play enable this couple to surprisingly tie the knot. The events which engineer Silvius and Phoebe to come together can be argued to be thanks to the pastoral romance theme, which is seen on a frequent basis in this play. This is true as pastoral romance is well known for its characters in disguise and it’s the disguise of Rosalind (Ganymede) that actually plays the vital role in bringing Silvius and Phoebe together. Thanks to Rosalind’s slyness Silvius finally is able to be with Phoebe and it seems that she shows some genuine affection towards Silvius. This is noticeable when she says in Act 5 Scene 4 to Silvius: â€Å"I will not eat my word. Now thou art mine, Thy faith my fancy to thee doth combine.† A relationship that does not develop until the tail end of the play â€Å"As You Like It† is between that of Oliver and Celia. Celia who is dressed up as Aliena looks to fall in love with Oliver at first sight and these provides an ironic end for the character Celia in the play. This is an accurate observation, because during the play Celia is seen teasing her dear friend Rosalind about the hastiness about her love for Orlando. This is another classic example of how pastoral romance is a striking feature of the play, because even though Celia has been ridiculing Rosalind love for Orlando it seems that even she is eventually bewitched by the powers of the countryside air and decides to marry a man whom she has just met. A unique relationship in the play is that of Pheobe and Ganymede. This is correct, as Phoebe is falling for Rosalind in disguise, without being informed. The relationship between these two characters is a clear example of the courtly love evident in â€Å"As You Like It†, because of the agony and frustration, which Pheobe endures due to her love Ganymede. Ganymede reacts to Phoebe;s attempts to win her heart by saying in Act 3 Scene 5: â€Å"I pray you, do not fall in love with me, For I am falser than vows made in wine.† This dismissal of Phoebe’s love on Ganymede’s part shows that Ganymede has no interest in Phoebe at all, but despite this in true courtly love fashion Phoebe’s decides to persist with her quest to win Ganymede’s heart. In the end their relationship disintergrates when Phoebe says in Act 5 Scene 4: â€Å"If sight and shape be true, Why then, my love adieu.† The most influential relationship in the whole of the play is beyond doubt that of between Rosalind and Orlando. This is true, as this relationship seems to dictate the course of the storyline. This relationship falls down heavily in to the elements of stereotypical pastoral romantic stories. This is correct, as Orlando seems to endure a lot of agony and pain over the course of the play†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦..I will finish this later In conclusion I believe Shakespeare has shown us that men actually behave in the same way as women when in love.
